As a Father, a Husband, a Pastor, a Patriot… My Reasons for #NeverTrump

trump

There are moments when our principles and inner values are so tested that it is imperative to announce where we stand and what we believe. In other words there are some things that are worth taking a stand about.

There are inherent risks in such an approach, perhaps even more so for those who serve in a public way such as I do. I believe, however, that this moment is worthy of such risk and that history will look back and mark how we walked in this time. Whatever the future of the Republican Party is, I desire for there to be no mistake. Therefore…

Here are the reasons why as a father, a husband, a pastor, a patriot, and finally as a man of principle WILL…. NEVER…. VOTE… FOR DONALD TRUMP.

  1. As a FATHER, I cannot in anyway condone the level to which this Presidential Campaign has sunk. Decency matters, or at least it should, and Max Lucado has written about it much better than I HERE

Therefore, I will not look my two daughters in the face and tell them that I supported the man who has led the most vitriolic, debasing, insult-laden, vulgar campaign in the modern era.

I want my girls to learn that victory is NOT more important than VALUES…

That power is NOT more important than PRINCIPLES…

and that money is NOT a better qualifier for a leader than MORALS…

  1. As a HUSBAND, I ABSOLUTELY will NOT support a man who has verbally degraded and abused women who dared to cross him. That’s a horrible precedent and I will not softly communicate to my wife that that sort of attitude is what I WANT OR am OKAY WITH in a leader.

If you haven’t seen the litany of Donald Trump’s vitriol for women, then follow these two links for a brief taste:

  1. As a PASTOR I am unafraid to say that what Donald Trump stands for AND the way he acts, speaks, and apparently BELIEVES is completely antithetical to the Gospel of Jesus…

One might say that religious leaders shouldn’t judge someone else’s salvation…

My response: WRONG.

Listen to the words of Scripture:

Luke 6:43-45 – ““For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

1 John 4:1“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

2 Corinthians 11:12-16 – “And what I am doing I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.”

Colossians 2:8 – “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.”

I could go on, but I hope you get the point… we are to TEST EVERYTHING!
Even Presidential Candidates…

Russell Moore has a much more in-depth post on why Donald Trump fails the morality and faith test for a leader HERE:

  1. As a PATRIOT, someone who LOVES our nation, I cannot stand idly by while someone who speaks despotic, totalitarian rhetoric poses as a conservative and supporter of liberty. Among the other scary things he has said, Donald Trump has now proposed going after the FREE Press when they write things he doesn’t like…

“One of the things I’m going to do, and I’ve never said this before,” Trump said at a rally in Fort Worth, Texas, “but one of the things I’m going to do is — if I win — is I’m going to open up our libel laws so when they write purposefully negative and horrible and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money.”

He has kicked people out of his rallies, encouraged mob like mentality of his supporters toward those who disagree or APPEAR to be disagreeing…

This man doesn’t love freedom and liberty… He loves HIMSELF.

I will not support such a man or be part of handing the most powerful position in the world over to a man who finds it so easy to demagogue instead of DIALOGUE.

It is important for any of you who may read this to understand that these are my personal beliefs and they do not reflect the views of my family, my denomination, or my church… HOWEVER… Here are some of the men I respect who have taken a similar stand:

Russell Moore – Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission

Erick Erickson – writer and founder of The Resurgent

Sen. Ben Sasse – Senator from the State of Kansas

James Lileks – author and journalist

There are more…. far more… and for all the reasons above and to encourage all those who feel as uneasy as I do about this man… I say #NeverTrump.

where i stand
